For 24 years in Le Sueur County, this program has operated through St. Wenceslaus Parish in New Prague with assistance from the Lutheran churches in Montgomery, New Prague, Le Center, Le Sueur and Kilkenny. The county’s Department of Human Services establishes need by surveying families and asking the ages and needs of their children. From there, a list of needed outerwear and clothing gift choices are compiled, with names removed for privacy. Then families, individuals, businesses and groups can choose (“adopt”) a child or family to shop for.
There are several ways to give to this program. One is to actually adopt a family and purchase the items requested for the children. Another way to give is to donate cash, and have the volunteer team of “Super Shoppers” purchase the clothing and outerwear requested.
How Does Adopt-a-Family Work at First Lutheran?
FLC will receive a list for 8 families. The list will include: the gift item, age, gender, and size of the child. FLC will set up a ‘Giving Tree’ in the narthex and on the tree will be tags that you can pick up and purchase the item on the tag. Financial donations are also accepted and will be used to purchase gift items. All gifts must be delivered unwrapped and labeled with the original tag from the tree to our ‘Giving Tree’ in the narthex by Sunday, December 1st.
